UPDATE ON LEGO’S NEWEST DVDS: JUSTICE LEAGUE GOTHAM CITY BREAKOUT AND SCOOBY DOO HAUNTED HOLLYWOOD.

Minifig Price Guide gave us some updates on LEGO’s newest Direct-to-DVD offerings. If you recall last February, we shared with you several details on our favorite LEGO Great Dane and his latest Haunted Hollywood DVD movie. As we mentioned before, this Scooby Doo Haunted Hollywood will come with an exclusive, limited edition Scooby Doo minifigure. Amazon already listed and updated their site to include some photos of the DVD’s gorgeous box art. It also updated its release date which is on May 10 – a week later compared to what we have mentioned before which is May 3.

On a similar note, Finnish retailer Cdon.com already listed LEGO’s Justice League Gotham City Breakout in its website. We mentioned before that Amazon UK announced the release of this movie – bearing a slightly different title – on July 4. If Cdon.com’s release date will be considered, it seems that we might see an earlier release of Gotham City Breakout which is a week earlier on June 27. It is known already that this Blu-ray/DVD release will also come with the exclusive Blue Nightwing minifigure which has so far received a lot of positive reviews recently.

Whatever the case is, we can fairly assume that both films will be released any time within the week of their announced debut. We’ll keep you posted on these things so be sure to stay tuned only here on the Brick Show.

DK RELEASES TWO MORE BOOKS UNDER ITS “LEGO BUILD YOUR OWN ADVENTURES” SERIES

DK Publishing is set to release some LEGO-themed books based on its Build Your Own Adventure (BYOA) series sometime in August. With the successful release of their two previous  BYOA series books also of August last year, LEGO Ninjago: Build Your Own Adventure and LEGO Friends: Build Your Own Adventure, Dorling Kindersley adds another two in the roster.

[] DK Ninjago

[] DK Friends

DK’s Build Your Own Adventure Series helps readers to have more building ideas under a particular theme. The third in the series, LEGO Star Wars: Build Your Own Adventure comes with a 73-piece, micro-fighter version of the Y-Wing Starfighter together with a Rebel pilot minifigure exclusively distributed with the book. The minifig is somehow similar to Dutch Vander as seen in LEGO Y-Wing Fighter (7658). Here is the complete description from Amazon.

[]

A book with bricks that inspires kids to build, play, and learn, LEGO® Star Wars™: Build Your Own Adventure combines more than 50 inspirational ideas for building with enthralling story starters from the world of LEGO Star Wars.

Organized into five chapters based on different planets in the Star Wars universe, readers will use their builds to break prisoners out on Cloud City and spy on the Imperial Army on Endor. Model ideas will inspire readers of various ages and abilities, with an appropriate mix of easy, medium, and harder builds.

LEGO Star Wars: Build Your Own Adventure will get kids inspired to build and play out adventures of their own, and it comes with bricks and instructions to build an exclusive LEGO Star Wars model to add to their collection.

Next to be released by DK on August 2 is LEGO City: Build Your Own Adventure. The set also comes with a free 99-pieces, Fire Truck set together with a Firefighter minifigure. Similarly, the book will provide you with several cool suggestions on how to come up with your own LEGO City building ideas. Here’s the official description.

[] DK City

Model ideas will inspire readers of various ages and abilities, with an appropriate mix of easy, medium, and harder models.

LEGO City: Build Your Own Adventure will get kids inspired to build and play out adventures of their own, and comes with bricks and instructions to build an exclusive LEGO City model to add to their collection.

Both books come in hardcover format and may now be pre-ordered via Amazon.com scheduled to be released on August 2 of this year. LEGO Star Wars: Build Your Own Adventure retails at $24.99, while the LEGO City: Build Your Own Adventure retails at $19.84.

TEST YOUR BUILDING SKILLS WITH “ELITE WEAPONS FOR LEGO FANATICS”

Perhaps the single, most important purpose of the LEGO brick is to continually challenge us with creations that push our creativity and design skills. This is particularly true with the most daunting (but definitely fun) builds that includes construction vehicles, fully functional robots, and mechanical toy guns. These builds in particular are excellent examples of learning tools that can help you master certain basic and advanced building techniques necessary for more complex builds later on. LEGO has a couple of building guides as well based on the Technic line, and the LEGO Mindstorms kit is one cool example of a learning tool that combines basic engineering techniques and computer programming.

However, when it comes to guns, LEGO has made it clear that the company is not into that sort of thing or builds. While in real life, guns are a very real and sensitive issue, it’s hard to deny the appeal that it has in terms of its mechanical complexity and design. Allow me to point two things before I proceed further: one, I don’t own a gun and most likely will not purchase one in the future; and two, this will not be a discussion on the merits (or the lack of it) of owning a gun. I simply admire the complexity and sophistication of its mechanism and how its parts work together similar to how a clockmaker admires the inner workings of a timepiece.

With that out of the way, allow me to introduce a pretty neat book that I stumbled upon at TheBrickBlogger.com. “Elite Weapons for LEGO Fanatics by industrial designer and freelance programmer Martin Hüdepohl showcases some of the most impressive and functional LEGO builds that I have ever seen. Martin also published two previous LEGO how-to books, namely “Badass LEGO Guns: Building Instructions for Five Working Guns” and “Weapons for LEGO Lovers”. He is quick to mention that even though his interests lie in making weapons out of LEGO, his creations do not pose a danger to anyone, nor they are life-threatening. They’re virtually harmless, much like a NERF gun or even a water pistol.

Here’s the description of his book as seen on Amazon.com where it retails at $20.99 for the paperback variant, and $14.49 for the Kindle downloadable version:

[elite 1]

[elite 2]

The last LEGO brick weapon construction book and design guide you’ll ever need, Elite Weapons for LEGO Fanatics features building instructions for thirteen fully functional LEGO masterpieces, including the monstrous, 27-inch-long Dinosaur Superior, a fully automatic combat rifle that can puncture aluminum cans, and a highly detailed HK G3 brick replica. Also featuring a helmet, a baton, handcuffs, sunglasses, and a grappling hook gun, which allows you to retrieve distant objects without ever leaving your seat, Elite Weapons for LEGO Fanatics includes a chapter on how to find the LEGO pieces you need and a comic book story featuring a hero using the weapons in action. LEGO fans of all ages and skill levels will find a treasure trove of models, including:

• Hammerhead Jr., a single-shot crossbow and its big brother, the heavy-duty Hammerhead Sr.
• Panzer Pod combat helmet
• KlopSTOCK baton
• Melody, a rubber-firing machine pistol
• Nice-1, a pocket-sized pistol that packs a punch
• Chinahook harpoon gun
• Sunglasses, in two different models
• A functioning Heckler & Koch G3 replica in LEGO bricks

[LEGO Book Elite Weapons Models]

As mentioned in the description, the book comes with how-to guides to build 13 fully functional models. Each example features a set of instructions, an inventory of parts, size, and the skill level required (labeled as a novice to grand-master). Other than the mechanically impressive guns, the book also includes instructions on how to build a KlopSTOCK baton, a pair of Spector sunglasses, a knuckle buster replica dubbed the Hitman, the Panzer Pod combat helmet, and a pair of handcuffs ironically called Lovelock. I appreciate the complexity of these builds, however, I have to say that I’m a little bit uncomfortable with the Hitman and KlopSTOCK as any child can get quickly absorbed in a role-playing game using these.

Nevertheless, with 340 pages, there is plenty to look at and learn at the same time. There’s also a neat section on how the models were developed, with pictures that chronicle the evolution of these replicas before you see them in their final form. The way Martin presented his creations was also helpful, giving pieces of building tips and techniques along the way. He also offered a how-to section on making the most out of Bricklink – the world’s largest online marketplace to buy and sell LEGO parts, both new or used – considering that most parts used in his builds were ordered directly from the site.

[LEGO Book Elite Weapons Handcuffs]

Perhaps as a supplement to the book, Martin also runs a YouTube Channel (Xubor) where he showcases some of the builds mentioned in his book. Check out this promotional video for “Elite Weapons for LEGO Fanatics”.

Overall, we give a two-thumbs up to Martin and his book. In terms of design and difficulty levels, his book offers a healthy challenge to test anyone’s LEGO building mettle. So what do you think about Elite Weapons for LEGO Fanatics? Do you think you will get yourself a copy?

DK LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force With Exclusive Minifigure Officially Revealed

Several months, ago prior to the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Amazon announced the release of a new DK Publishing book that will help any young Padawan learner explore the bricktastic Star Wars galaxy. Just recently, the movie’s website officially announced the full-details of the newest Dorling Kindersley book about the galaxy far, far away retold in a fun and entertaining way that only LEGO can deliver.

Here’s the full description as quoted from Starwars.com, as well the great reveal on the exclusive Star Wars The Force Awakens minifigure.

Looking to learn the ways of the brick side of the Force? DK Publishing is your master now.

StarWars.com is excited to reveal LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force, an in-depth, photo-filled companion to LEGO Star Wars, coming in June from DK. Written by veteran Star Wars authors Adam Bray and Cole Horton, the new tome spans the entire saga, featuring detailed information on the latest sets and minifigures of the LEGO Star Wars galaxy — and comes with an exclusive minifigure of its own. Meet “Unkar’s Brute,” one of the junk trader and thugs employed by Unkar Plutt from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, available only with LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force.

Based on the above photo, the ‘Unkar’s Thug’ minifigure comes with a sand, brown color combination staying true to the harsh desolate environment of the planet Jakku. The minifig’s torso also closely resembles the old, tattered shirt of Unkar’s desert minion. While the head is a little far off from the actual character, it will be better if a helmet is added as seen from the movie. Overall, the minifigure is great and its exclusivity gives it a more “take me” appeal.

DK also has something for all LEGO Star Wars trivia lovers out there. Starting May, DK will release its Ultimate Factivity Collection: LEGO Star Wars. Designed for all Star Wars sages and Jedi in-training, it will test your knowledge across the Star Wars galaxy through cool activities, games, and puzzles jam packed together with a set of more than 500 collectible stickers. Blocks Magazine Loses Head Editor

Over the last few months, “Blocks Magazine”  has seemed to be growing in popularity across the world, and I know for sure it is a huge hit with LEGO fans in the UK. If you do not know what Blocks Magazine is, it  is a fan-based magazine dedicated completely to LEGO, bringing new set reviews, product comparisons, MOC techniques and behind the scenes details every month. I’m not being payed to say this, but it  sure is a great magazine. Therefore, it  saddens me to know that the magazine is losing it’s head editor.

[blocks magazine]

Yes, Mark Guest – who LITERALLY  made Blocks Magazine from scratch – is leaving his creation very soon, and now this baby is left without its Father. They are now looking for  a head editor, so if  you would be at all interested in, well, owning a magazine (pretty cool right?) then you can contact them via their website.

LEGO Ninjago: The Visual Dictionary Minifigure is Zane

DK has revealed the limited edition minifigure in the LEGO Ninjago: The Visual Dictionary, Zane Rebooted. Zane won’t be an exclusive minifigure but one that we’ve seen before in the Destructoid 70726 set. It’s disappointing that there won’t be an exclusive minifigure for the book but at least you can get this version of Zane without buying the fairly expensive set.
