Kylo Ren Will Get A New TIE Fighter in The Last Jedi – and Will LEGO Pick It Up as a New Star Wars Set?

Last month, we featured our take on the LEGO Star Wars The Last Jedi sets that we want to see based on the film’s official teaser trailer. As always, resident master builder Tyler was quick to draw inspiration from the trailer and came up with his own version of one of the sets mentioned in our wish list – the LEGO Star Wars Resistance Skimmer MOC.

We’re still half through the year before we hear any words from LEGO regarding the official sets planned for The Last Jedi, but some online retailers may probably be giving away some hints and minor spoilers about The Last Jedi that may well translate to another promising LEGO set.

This is particularly the case as Making Star Wars have revealed several days ago. They were quick to take note (and a screen grab) of what they believe to be a pre-order listing from online store Mikado (the listing has been taken down eventually) about a Hot Wheels version of Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter. Thankfully, Making Star Wars managed to a get a shot of the said TIE Fighter, though the image quality is not that clear to allow us a more detailed look.

In a related post, MSW managed to get some insider info on how Kylo Ren’s new starfighter will look. According to their post,

Supreme Leader Snoke was let down by Kylo Ren when he failed to stop the “girl.” Now he is trying to prove himself. He doesn’t wear his helmet as much as he did in the first film from what I’ve been told. His new TIE has pointy wings like the TIE Interceptor, but with a pill shaped body. The cockpit is sort of like an old B-29 bomber compared to the classic TIE cockpit window. The thrusters in the back remind me of the Falcon as they glow blue and sort of evoke the Falcon. The custom ship was supposedly made to his specifications so he could take down the Resistance and I believe we see Kylo fly from the Mega Destroyer in his new ship.

This comes close to the image of what Mikado released, with Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter having a sleeker, design akin to that of a TIE Interceptor. It has wide and slender wings, with a cockpit similar to that of the old B-29 bomber. We never got to see Kylo fly his own ship before in The Force Awakens, and as Star Wars News Net has noted, it will be an awful lot of wasted heritage if we don’t see Kylo up there engaging in a space dog fight. His granddad was once touted to be the best star-pilot in the galaxy, while his father is famous for flying through an unforgiving asteroid belt and making it out alive. Not to mention piloting the iconic Millennium Falcon, and making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

LEGO has released several versions of the TIE Fighter in the past and it will certainly be great to see Kylo Ren in action as he engages the Rebel forces aboard his very own TIE Fighter. As of to date, LEGO has only released Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle (75104) as a nod to his very own ship (which he didn’t pilot by the way) as seen in the first scenes of The Force Awakens.

We might as well add Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter to our wish list of LEGO TLJ sets that we want to see, and we certainly hope to have this as an official LEGO set later on.

Are We To See The End of NEXO Knights Anytime Soon?

A piece of not-so-good news (I guess depending on how you look at it) just came out from Brickset a few moments ago. According to an excerpt found from this month’s subscription of Blocks Magazine says, and to quote:

“..rumour has it that [NEXO Knights] is being cancelled and the summer sets may not even be released”

The article didn’t say when and where the rumor emerged, nor did we see this coming since there has been no hint of its cancellation from any of our sources. However, it is painful to realize, from The LEGO Group’s perspective, that the NEXO Knights as a theme may seem to have failed in delivering the sales or the expected return-on-investment that it hopes to see. Furthermore, it is not surprising for TLG to pull the plug from its theme even if announcements have been made regarding prior releases such as in the case of the rumored cancellation of LEGO Dimensions.

It is not that the theme itself is not worthy of praise. In my opinion, the NEXO Knights is perhaps one of LEGO’s most visually stunning theme, introducing an array of excellently designed sets and elements. It is labelled as one of LEGO’s ‘Big Bang’ theme with TLG shelling out a significant amount of investment. However, unlike Friends or Ninjago which has stood well for more than five years, NEXO Knights seems to have lost its initial appeal. Again, it’s not that the sets are not that impressive. Perhaps it may only suggest that the idea of a fusion between medieval warriors and high-tech weaponry is not really enough to call the attention of all LEGO fans. I even know of several AFOLs who even consider the NEXO Knights sets as an ‘abomination’ of the much loved Castle theme. At the end of the day, I guess it boils down into personal preferences.

Please take this piece of news with a grain of salt, and take note that the Blocks Magazine article does not directly state that NEXO Knights will be cancelled nor the summer sets will not be released. Nevertheless, we’ll keep a close eye on this and only time can tell if we will eventually see the curtain fall on our heroes from Knighton, suffering the same fate as that of Mixels and Bionicle.
