The Home of the Brick Officially Reveals its 5th Exclusive Set – the LEGO Building Systems 40505

Last February, LEGO fans were given a glimpse of the 5th exclusive set that can only be found in the LEGO Store in the famed Home of the Brick in Billund, Denmark. And this time around, the LEGO Building Systems 40505 set is another limited edition collectible that pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the humble LEGO brick.

And with its official reveal, we can now have a better look at what this unique set has to offer.

Exploring the LEGO Building Systems 40505 Set

This year, the LEGO Home pays homage to the roots of LEGO play by putting the spotlight on three iconic themes in its portfolio: the classic LEGO System, Technic, and DUPLO. These three systems come together to narrate the captivating story of the LEGO brand, and the LEGO Building Systems 40505 set perfectly captures three pivotal moments in its history.

This tribute of a set kicks off with a nod to the groundbreaking LEGO System in Play. Back in 1955, the introduction of Town Plan No.1 revolutionized the world of building toys, establishing the LEGO System in Play as the cornerstone of creativity and imagination. Crafted by the visionary mind of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen himself, this innovative concept aimed to nurture a child’s imagination and foster the joy of creating using LEGO bricks– values that remain at the core of the LEGO Play experience to this day.

Miniature Marvels of Iconic LEGO Models as Seen in the LEGO Building Systems 40505

Other than the timeless elegance of Town Plan No. 1, the LEGO Building Systems 40505, also puts the spotlight on the vibrant LEGO DUPLO Passenger Train reminiscent of the 1980s. Similarly, it also adds another classic to its miniature tribute of another timeless classic. While the pistons of the LEGO Technic Car Chassis may not spring to life like in its original counterpart, every other detail has been meticulously recreated to evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder.

Town Plan No. 1, revered among LEGO aficionados, serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of LEGO play, sparking memories and storytelling among fans of all ages. Meanwhile, the DUPLO Passenger Train and Technic Car Chassis both beckon forth a wave of fond recollections from days gone by.

A Journey Through LEGO History

Similar to 2018’s LEGO promotional set, 60 Years of the LEGO Brick (40290), the LEGO Building Systems 40505 also includes several nano-scale models at the back side of this brick-built display. Behind the grey facade lies a captivating timeline featuring iconic milestones from LEGO’s illustrious history. From iconic The Wooden Duck to Technic Space Shuttle set 8480, each nano-build defines a period of LEGO’s rich and creative history.

With a total of 19 nano-builds waiting to be discovered, there’s no shortage of marvels to behold in the LEGO Building Systems 40505. And if that’s not enough, there’s even a space in that cleverly built display encouraging you to add your own LEGO masterpiece. After all, LEGO play is about more than just building – it’s about creating memories that last a lifetime.

LEGO House Exclusive Set Revealed: The LEGO House A Minifigure Tribute (40504)

The House of the Brick officially unveiled today this year’s exclusive LEGO House set. After legendary LEGO designer Stuart Harris gave a bit of a teaser a couple of days ago, LEGO has finally lifted the curtain to its LEGO House A Minifigure Tribute (40504). Read the announcement below.

A tribute to the minifigure!

New LEGO® House Exclusive set From 1 March!

LEGO House A Minifigure Tribute (40504)

This year marks the 45th anniversary since the LEGO Group launched the very first LEGO minifigure in 1978. Since then, more than 10 billion minifigures have been produced in more than 8000 variants.

You can take part in celebrating the legendary minifigure by building the iconic Captain Redbeard, this year’s LEGO House Exclusive set. The finished figure, complete with a peg leg, pirate hat, and hook, is approx. 30 cm. high and consists of 1041 bricks.

This exclusive set is sold from 1 March 2023 and is only available in the LEGO store in LEGO House, Billund, Denmark.

Each year, the LEGO House Exclusive sets pay tribute to the most iconic LEGO Group stories. ‘A Minifigure Tribute’ is the fourth set in the series. These special sets can only be bought in the LEGO Store at LEGO House.

Meet the designers of the product

On 3 and 17 March, you can meet the two LEGO designers behind the product, Stuart Harris and Markus Rollbühler, in front of the LEGO House LEGO Store. Here you can see the concept models, have a chat with the designers and get your box signed.

When: 3 + 17 March at 4.00 – 5.00 pm CET

Here’s a bit of trivia according to LEGO: as of to date, there’s a total of 10 billion minifigures already out there since the first one came out of production. The LEGO Minifigure is also 45 years old since its initial launch and current iteration from 1978.

That is why The LEGO Group saw it fit to offer this next LEGO House exclusive set to the iconic character of Captain Redbeard – one of the most popular minifigure characters ever created coming from the classic Pirates theme. If you’re a fan of the theme, you might recall that Captain Redbeard originally came with the LEGO Pirates Black Seas Barracuda 6285 from 1989. The set was later re-released in 2002 with set number 10040, then re-imagined in the most recent LEGO Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay (21322) of 2020.

This brick-built version of Captain Redbeard clocks in at 1,041 pieces and stands 30 centimeters tall. The LEGO House A Minifigure Tribute (40504) is available only at the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, for $84.99. Unless you already have an arranged trip to the House of the Brick, your options might be limited if you’re eyeing this exclusive.

This Year’s Exclusive 2023 LEGO House Set Will Be Revealed on March 1st

LEGO’s social media platforms have released a rather interesting glimpse of what could be this year’s exclusive 2023 LEGO House set scheduled to be unveiled on the 1st of March. If you recall, last year’s exclusive 2022 LEGO House set paid tribute to LEGO Master Builder Dagny Holm.

As you can see from the video below, it appears that this upcoming LEGO House exclusive will have a pirate theme, as Stuart Harris, the set’s designer, dons an outfit reminiscent of a buccaneer and proceeds to unveil a treasure chest from a drawer. We eagerly anticipate the unveiling of this annual exclusive set from the LEGO House within the next few days.

Here’s the official press release for the 2023 LEGO House set exclusive.

Exclusive: LEGO House Dinosaurs (40366) Now Available on LEGO.com, But…

As a global brand, LEGO has always strived to make its products available to children (and parents) around the world. Any newly released set can be counted on to be available anywhere after launch. But even LEGO has fallen into the habit of product exclusivity, with some sets available only by region or even by location. It’s true that the company has taken steps to really make their products generally available globally, but some items remain stuck to their places. The LEGO House Dinosaurs (40366) set exclusive only in the Home of the Brick, Billund is one example. Or at least that was the case until a recent LEGO announcement.

From Brickset we learned that LEGO is finally making its LEGO House Dinosaurs exclusive (40366) available at LEGO.com online shop. This could come as great news for collectors who still can’t plan for travelling to Billund, Denmark. But here’s one detail to knock the wind out of our sails. The LEGO House Dinosaurs can only be purchased online at the Denmark, UK and Ireland LEGO.com shops. No way to phrase it gently: that availability is still limited. American and Asian LEGO enthusiasts look to be out of luck, for now.

If you happen to live in the above three markets, then you’re in for a treat. LEGO House Dinosaurs (40366) went live in LEGO.com UK/Ireland and Denmark this Thursday, October 20. The price seemingly hasn’t been set yet, though its 599DK unit price in Billund could be converted to £70/€80.

LEGO Wooden Duck Giveaway at LEGO House Skaerbaek 2022

Before developing the plastic building bricks synonymous with its name today, the LEGO company had an earlier iconic “face” toy. Founder Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter; thus, LEGO’s original products were traditional wooden toys. One item in particular stood out in historical memory: a wooden duck on wheels. Pull it along and the wheel mechanism makes the duck’s beak open and close ala “quacking”. LEGO certainly remembers this early toy fondly enough to give it an official LEGO-brick set. True, it’s only exclusive to LEGO House Billund, but it’s there. And this year it even got a limited-edition miniature.

Brick Fanatics reports to us that LEGO “released” another LEGO House exclusive based on their classic wooden duck. Actually, the item was a giveaway at the recent AFOL event Skaerbaek Fan Weekend at LEGO House Billund. On Friday, September 23, event-goers who bought exclusive AFOL Day 2022 minifigures received a minifig-sized plastic duck accessory. This unique LEGO piece came to be thanks to 3D-printing, a LEGO first for plastic pieces. Amazingly, even for its size the plastic duck replicates its larger original’s quacking function when rolled along flat surfaces. It even features a front handle fitting a minifigure’s hands for posing.

This LEGO minifig-scale duck toy is bound to become a new rare find after this one-off event. Will it come back in future occasions? We can always believe in possibilities. A Minifigure Factory created the Skaerbaek AFOL 2022 limited minifigures. Maybe other LEGO locations with the Minifigure Factory could offer the duck as an accessory. Only time will tell.

New LEGO Ideas Contest: Get Your Build Displayed at LEGO House for LEGO 90th Anniversary!

Some activities are just so much fun that you’d like to do it again. The same might be said for a certain contest hosted on LEGO Ideas too. Only last year, LEGO Ideas launched a building contest for its membership. The winners wouldn’t see their creations being reviewed for possible mass-production. Rather, they would have the honor of having their work be displayed at LEGO House in Billund. This March 2022, like last year, contest is being run one more time. The circumstances are rather more meaningful, though. The entries will get to celebrate with LEGO’s on its 90th anniversary.

So here you have it: the new LEGO Ideas contest “Celebrating 90 Years of Play in LEGO House.” The rules are the same as last time. Participants need to submit images of their builds to the Ideas Contest page. There are three subject categories: Musical, Futuristic and the plainly obvious Celebrate. LEGO Ideas will select 25 entries in each category to be sent off for a one-year display exhibit at LEGO House. In addition, one build from each of those categories will be declared grand winners and win the following:

LEGO Architecture
LEGO House Exclusives
LEGO 90th Anniversary Set (vote winner, will be revealed in later date)

While participants may submit digital-build images, if their entry is chosen they must be able to physically construct it. It’s their actual handmade work to be displayed at LEGO House after all. LEGO will even cover the shipping costs of chosen submissions. The deadline for Idea Intake is April 7. What a way to celebrate nine decades of LEGO, even older than the LEGO brick!

Exclusive Set Dagny Holm – Master Builder (40503) Available at LEGO House

It’s true that LEGO has resolved to phase out the idea of sets exclusive to one region or other.  Nevertheless, some LEGO products are so integral to a particular location that it could only be found there. A few years ago there was an exclusive LEGO Architecture set (40199) of Billund Airport. It was available only at the LEGO Store of said airport’s departure hall. From this snippet alone you could discern that Billund, Denmark aka LEGO’s company town has some sweet exclusives still. In fact, there’s a new set that might be found at LEGO House, according to Promobricks.

LEGO House/The Home of the Brick in Billund is LEGO’s gallery/museum/indoor experience center and events venue. Oh, and it also has its own LEGO Store quite naturally. There, one may find the new Dagny Holm – Master Builder (40503) exclusive set. Said product is a tribute to Master Builder Dagny Holm (1917-2004), a niece of LEGO founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen. Holm transitioned her education in Classical Sculpture Design to making fantastic large-scale LEGO-brick models and structures. She would remain a company master builder until retiring at age 70. The Dagny Holm – Master Builder set (40503) went on sale at the LEGO House this past March 1, 18 years after her death.

Visitors to the Home of the Brick could get this exclusive set there for DKK599 (roughly $89). For now, Danish and possibly mainland European tourists have easier access to buy it. For everyone else around the world, remaining pandemic travel restrictions (and a crisis several countries eastward) can be challenging. Hopefully supplies of Dagny Holm – Master Builder (40503) will last for future LEGO House guests.

Netflix-Produced LEGO House Documentary Now Viewable Free on YouTube

LEGO House, opened in Billund, Denmark in 2017, is the ultimate experience venue for fans of the LEGO brand. It’s a museum, events place, activity center and even occasional Airbnb destination. LEGO brick-heads never fail to be astounded by it. In 2018 the streaming giant Netflix made a documentary on the appropriately-called Home of the Brick. In almost an hour of runtime, the program delves into the history of LEGO House. Unfortunately for most interested viewers the documentary has been accessible only to Netflix subscribers. This week however, LEGO prevailed on Netflix to make this special available to all audiences.

According to Brick Fanatics, the “LEGO House Documentary” can finally be seen free on YouTube. As of September 20 the special is now hosted on the official LEGO House YouTube channel. In 47 minutes viewers may learn the conception of the Home of the Brick and its challenges in construction. Featured interviews include the key members of the LEGO House project. Even Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen has his own piece to say about the genesis of the Home of the Brick. The third-generation majority-owner of The LEGO Group was one of the project’s guiding hands after all.

LEGO might have sound reason for making the Netflix documentary open to all. The actual LEGO House itself closed down in the recent past due to the pandemic. They have only recently begun attempts at normalizing the events schedule again. LEGO House Fan Day, the first after the appearance of COVID, happened Thursday, September 23. The former streaming-exclusive documentary could help drum up renewed attention to the Home of the Brick. Perhaps as the pandemic comes more under control a new wave of guests could check out LEGO House. Until then, the documentary is up for all those curious.
